Pub closures 2005: 2006: 2007

It is, to some, hard to believe the extent of pub closures due to the SBE (Smoking Ban Experiment) so it is helpful to have a graphical reminder of the carnage wrought by this despicable ban. Basil Brown gives such a lucid reminder.

If you have not already signed up to the campaign SOPAC (Save Our Pubs And Clubs) then I urge you to do so today.

UK Pub closures [British Beer and Pub Association figures]

2005: 102
2006: 216
2007: 1,409

Big H/T of gratitude to Smoke Alarm:

UPDATE: Now included are the figures for 2008 and the overall figure for all pub closures since ground zero 2007 to 2009.

This graph should be made of concrete blocks and built outside Westminster, would they still ignore it?

Basil should have added in the 1900 closures for 2008 as well.

And at 53 closures a week in 2009, the losses look even sadder. That would add a further 2756 closures.

Apparently 2010 will be even worse unless an amendment is enacted.

Someones got to stop any more of our pubs closing because Labour can not hear as their ears are stuffed with "No No It Can't Be Jelly"

Yes, I should have included the updated figures and will in future graphics. The 2005-7 figures still make a powerful point on their own though: I've had some raging arguments with ban-apologists about closures being "just part of the general trend". The BBPA figures show this nulabor argument to be typically disingenuous, with the existing slow ebb suddenly jumping off a cliff.

In short, nulabor took a struggling but much-valued industry and kicked it in the balls. By then instructing it to have a healthy workout in the re-education gym and come back when it's a wine bar, they were able to applaud themselves for "helping" the proles make the correct choices.

So are you saying that the smoking ban has forced these pubs to close ?
What a sensible idea, I would never have thought of that and was sure that it was due to bad debts from some tin sheds in the U.S.A. !!

Anon, the so called credit crunch was not mentioned until the tail end of 2008 and it started hit not long into 2009. Obviously not all closures are down to the smoking ban as pubs, like any other business, close down for a variety of reasons. Pubs closing before the ban had a quick return under new (and probably better) management. But for the trade as a whole to have such a dramatic downturn precisely on that [and ever since] date tells the true story of why pubs are closing at an unprecedented rate.

The catalyst was most definately the SBE (Smoking Ban Experiment), an experiment in social engineering!

Could someone do the same with the figures for Ireland and Scotland? I know the England/Wales figures are compelling enough but those figures, as well as being added support, also have the benefit of being during the boom so any excuses about it being the recession are showed up as the twaddle they are.

Also, any stat-nerds with time on their hands have figures for pub closures from 1979 - 1984 and 1989 - 1995? It would be interesting to see how smoking pubs did during previous recessions. I imagine closures increased, but I would bet my pension that they didn't increase twentyfold as they have now.
