The Gillian Merron effect

Seen in a locked pub in Redcar at lunchtime:

Important notice to all customers.

It is with great regret due to the ever increasing taxation set by our Government on licenced premises, high and increasing business rates and high pub rental charged by Enterprise Inns, that as of Monday the 15th of February 2010 these opening times will come into force. It is with regret also that we will no longer be offering catering facilities due to the change in opening hours.

Monday.................Closed all day.
Tuesday.................6pm till late.
Wednesday...........Closed all day.
Thursday...............6pm till late.
Friday....................4pm till late.
Saturday................4pm till late.
Sunday...................4pm till late.

As a company we had to take these measures to prevent Elgins becoming another boarded up pub in a depressing High Street.

Please support us, as you have in the past.

I couldn't believe what I was reading, not one mention of the smoking ban. Redcar pubs have been trading cheek by jowel for centuries now and not one of them has gone out of business...untill just after the 1st of July 2007. The proprietors must be a fan of Gillian Merron one would presume.
