The animals queued up two by two*

Contrary to the public opinion encouraged by pharma-funded anti-smoking loons, Freedom2Choose is a pro-choice organisation (the clue is in the name), not just pro-smoking.

As such, F2C is in the same corner as The Free Society, and the Adam Smith Institute, in defending personal choice for each individual in our country.

Unfortunately, there are those who wish to ride roughshod over the rights of the individual on all issues at all times, in their relentless march towards bland righteous conformity. F2C have long warned that the smoking ban was just a salami slice towards total abandonment of the concept of personal choice, as Rod Liddle at the Spectator alluded to a couple of months ago.

The smoking ban was always going to be the thin end of the wedge

Rod Liddle is appalled by Sir Liam Donaldson’s deployment of statistics in the hope of making it harder to have a drink. A surrealist would struggle to keep up with such campaigns against our human pleasures

Well, Oldham Council, an unholy alliance of Labour and Liberal Socialist Democrats are duly proving F2C to be very prescient.

If you are in agreement with the righteous, please bid the time-honoured tradition of buying a round a nostalgic farewell on the way.

Drinkers in Oldham will have to queue at bars and buy no more than two beers at a time in an attempt to curb violence and binge-drinking.

Customers will be encouraged to stand behind rope barriers similar to those used in banks and post offices as they wait to be served, while drinking in the queue will also be discouraged, under new proposals.

Derek Heffernan, a Liberal Democrat councillor, said: "There would have to be some form of barrier so people couldn't push past, either a rope or perhaps something stronger.

"It would be the end of buying a round but we have to do something to calm things down. There have been fights and stabbings and it's not right that people going out for the evening have to worry about being attacked."

As usual, common sense flies out of the window with these idiots. Collective punishment rules yet again. A few rotten apples cause trouble** and the evening entertainment of the whole has to suffer. No exceptions for the well-behaved - guilty until proven innocent.

The fact that laws already exist to punish those who behave badly seems to have totally escaped the notice of Oldham Councillors.

I shouldn't laugh at the BBPA objecting like a limp lettuce to this latest attack on their trade, but it wasn't unexpected by those who were forward-thinking. The BBPA's previous approach with regard to freedom of choice issues has been supine appeasement. One wonders if they might be slowly waking up to the threat that this type of righteous knee-jerking poses to their members, but they and CAMRA have spectacularly failed to do so thus far, so don't hold your breath.

It won't bother the righteous too much ... they wouldn't have more than one friend to buy a round for anyway.

* Obscure Noah's Ark reference

** Funny how MPs bleat that we shouldn't judge the majority on the actions of a minority who steal from us, but all of us have to suffer greatly because of the actions of a negligible minority when the righteous choose.

Good points, Dick, but remember, if the idiots, half wits and dysfunctional cowards
of Britain are willing to stand in rain and
sleet for a smoke , queueing for a pint should
be a doddle. Anyway they are used to queues in
Oldham, either benefits office or job centre
with due deference to our good Oldham pals who
are not included in the above

You're totally right with this and this is why ordinary people are getting very angry.

NuLiebour and their PC correct friends keep pushing for more legislation all the time to prevent crime and terrorism. Why? All they need to do is enforce existing laws.

It's no wonder that the whole country is angry - I was angry well before the expenses scandal, and I've never been angry in my life until this stupid party gained this much power.

They have wrecked my country and are so hard-faced to still believe that they are right. They are controlling, puritanical freaks - out to surpress and control the entire nation.

I have never hated anyone or anything in my life (I'm getting on in years now as well), but I have experienced hate for the first time in the last few years because of NuLiebour. I do not like it and I want their denormalisation programme to stop.

I am not defending this for a moment, but AIUI it will only apply when there are promotions running of the "all drinks £1" or "all you can drink for a tenner" variety. It won't apply to normal pubs trading in their usual manner.

I am sick of hearing about our cafe culture. Hazel Blears keeps going on about it.

Sorry Hazel - but Manchester doesn't have the same weather as those 'down south'

'Down South' was fucking freezing this year. Same as 'Oop North'
Anyone standing outside on the Kent coast with a fag deserves to be queueing for their pint.
When will people stand up for their rights and stop the few idiots telling them what to do and where they can do it.

If a law does not exist about any fucking thing then a committee is hastily formed to deal with it! One of these days I'm going to join the bastards and demand a committee be formed to ban these bloody stupid committees that hold sway over our lives.

I heard with interest that not enough men were banged up for rape? Could it be that they were not guilty???

Existing laws are there and if they don't work did they get it wrong?

Lawmakers? Dont make me laugh!

Helen, spot on, I feel exactly the same, I would imagine thousands of others do too.

As for standing in a queue for a drink, well I will let the sheeples do that.

@Curmudgeon - Good to see you here and, considering your pedigree, I don't doubt for a minute that you are correct (think you are local too?). Unfortunately, experience tells us that these things don't stop where they begin.

This is the problem with all these well-meaning initiatives, they just encourage the worst within the righteous to push for the same approach elsewhere.

We're long past the thin end and moving rapidly to the medium-sized and further.

The lobbies bring forth a familiar new speak chant, painting any reference, no matter how valid, to Fascism, as an automatic disqualification. If educated on what constitutes the power base of Fascism as described by Dr. Robert Proctor it was an incitement of the very worst of human nature. A crowd born mentality of pointing fingers at others who make choices concerning their lives, which do not coincide with our own. It is in fact the only government style which would embrace the current healtiest movement. The scolds and tambourine bangers who inspired best babies contests and racial segregation, are guiding the bigotry, no longer able to practice in targeting traditional humanity divisions. Who more defenseless and easy to degrade exist, than the addicted or the obese? Perhaps expansions will include dwarf tossing contests and chasing wheelchairs with your car for sport in place of politically corrected and boring Hockey games.

There are only two lines of thought concerning smoking If it is an addiction, as popular belief has it, creating a world which makes it as difficult for smokers as possible in hopes of forcing them to quit, creates an atmosphere where quitting is not an option and the instigator takes on a role, with as much empathy involved as someone who would kick a cripple demanding they walk or they will be kicked again. The other option would be a non belief that smoking is an addiction but a choice, involving free will. Which places the initiator in the camp as described as a Fascist and a lowlife who lives in a false sense of reality, when declaring his government or community is free.

Second hand smoke was first described by Hitler and it took America 60 years to develop the science which allowed him the courage to describe it. Rules restricting science until recently would never have allowed that brand of science to be described as legitimate. Times they are changing.
