In absentia

“The witch hunt against MPs in general will undermine democracy. It will weaken parliament - handing yet more power to governments. Branding a whole group of people as undesirables led to Hitler's gas chambers.”

David Wilshire MP, November 2009

Quite a strong condemnation of groups being branded as undesirable. One could even use the term 'denormalise', I suppose.

'Some people would resent the idea of cigarettes being kept under the counter like magazines that you wouldn't want displayed. But I think that these are all part of the denormalisation process.'

Liam Donaldson, July 2007

One could take David Wilshire more seriously if he was as vocally against all groups being branded as 'undesirable', rather than just when it suits him.

On the day that lepers smokers were officially kicked out of every building in the land, even if they owned it, he was notably absent.

Obviously not that important an issue, then.

  1. Wasn't he the guy who championed Clause 28 against gay folks?
